The scarring oft the punishment
For sins that have long passed,
Though sin's removed by grace of God
The shame and grieving last.
And though repentance is sincere,
And God's forgiveness real,
Memories often swamp the mind
And peace of mind they steal.
Darts of condemnation
From the enemy's sharp bow,
Keep the soul in anguish
Though in our minds we know...
That Jesus paid the penalty,
It covers all our sin,
It's buried in the deepest sea,
As if it's never been.
“Forgiven and forgotten”.
That's what our God has said,
“Just as if they'd never been”,
The reason that Christ bled.
So when the accusations come,
God's armor we put on,
The belt of truth will gird our loins,
The sword, God's Word, be drawn...
Reminding us the work's been done,
The penalty been paid,
The perfect, sinless sacrifice,
On Him it all was laid.
We're covered by the One who loved,
There's nothing else to do,
The scarring that oft rears it's head,
The human point of view.
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:8-12 (NIV)
“Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:22-23 (NIV)
