A tiny, frightened baby bird,
A dropout from the nest,
Shiv'ring in the dew-drenched grass
Heart racing in his breast.
”I'm doomed. It's over. I'm washed up.
I'll never learn to fly.”
A sound of rustling wings o'erhead
And Mama was nearby.
But in the safety of the nest,
Too scared to try again,
He hovers, waiting for some food,
From Mama now and then.
Once again he spread his wings
To catch the morning breeze,
And just before he hits the ground
His fate Mama foresees.
”I knew it, yes, I knew I'd fall,
I cannot learn to fly.”
But once again his mama waits
To teach the little guy.
The scene so oft repeated
And soon he finds his wings,
With confidence he soars o'erhead,
To nests no longer clings.
Young Christians can be “dropouts”,
Too often find we've sinned,
Convinced we're failures, all washed up,
Embarrassed and chagrined.
It often takes a helping hand
To raise us from our knees,
Someone to teach us and stand by,
To catch the Spirit's breeze.
After repeated failures,
We finally learn to trust,
With confidence and wings of hope
Our lives to God entrust.
