In my mind
Clap my hands and twirl
Faster when the rain
Patters on the roof
Hear my heart
Beat faster
Mama speaks
She doesn’t know
I know what she says
And hopes
She whispers prayers
I hear
Papa speaks
His words cover
Buried disappointment
Shame and regret
He doesn’t know
I can hear
His heart
I speak
My mouth opens
To grunt and babble
I want to shout
I love you
Mama hugs me
She hears
Jesse speaks
Born ten years after me
Her mouth forms words
Beautiful words
Even two year old “no’s”
Are beautiful
To Mama
Strangers stare
Is something wrong with him
They don’t understand
My wall
Maybe autistic
They say
I listen
Hear the trill of humming birds
Hear the willow branch tap
My window pane
I can hum
And tap too
I pray
Clap my hands and twirl
Praising my Lord
I can’t sing but
I can hum
And tap too
God hears
He understands my sounds
He knows why
The humming bird hums
He know why
My thoughts are trapped
He knows why
I clap and twirl
I hear Him
In my heartbeat

My daughter is mildly autistic, and sometimes I struggle to understand her. Your poem touches me because it reminds me that God created and understands her perfectly! Thank you.
