presses against my eardrums
its low hum taunting
as my ears strain to hear—
like night absorbs the day
my words are
absorbed by Silence—
Doubt the only voice I hear—
anguished sobs flee from my mouth—
Audite meus votum dominus!
Hear my prayer, O Lord!
At the Door I stand
knocking, pleading—the
sound reverberates off
empty, vacant walls—
Door stands impervious
unmovable, pitiless—
Doubt the only one who answers—
angry and defiant I yell—
Audite meus votum dominus!
Hear my prayer O Lord!
Ah Doubt, my old nemesis
your visits are never welcome—
you challenge my complacency
question my assumptions—
you take me places
I don’t wish to go
lead me to the
precipice of unbelief —
Canyon walls the only ones who hear
as they echo back my cries—
Where are you, God?
Who are you, God?
I gaze upon the
valley of dry bones
that once was my faith—
stripped and barren—
can life be restored?
In a voice raspy and hoarse from weeping
I whisper—
Audite meus votum dominus. . .
Hear my prayer, O Lord. . .
As the sun slowly rises
melting away the night
Doubt gently loosens its grip and
disappears into the fading night—
its job done—
like the song of the
first bird greeting the morning
I hear the voice of my
Beloved, my Lord—
my heart sings out—
Audite meus votum dominus!
Hear my prayer, O Lord!
Doubt will come again—
I have no doubt—
a necessary ingredient, a vital component
to growth and maturity—
it forces me to wrestle
with childish, inadequate faith—
put to death obsolete, self-centered theology—
expand my understanding
of a God who can never be
fully known or understood—
I give thanks to my God
who sends Doubt
to sharpen and hone—
polish, sand, and refine—
stretch and strengthen—
Humbly I pray—
Audite meus votum dominus.
Hear my prayer, O Lord.
