She knew that He could heal her daughter. She had heard stories of others being healed. Death didn't even have any power over this Rabbi. Could it be that He was really the Son of David? The Promised One that the Jews prayed for? Daphne just had to find Him. She continued to press through the streets, calling apologizes as she stumbled and ran into people. She could hear insults as she pressed on to her errand; closer to a mob of people surrounding one man.
She tried to press through the throng, "I need to see Him! My daughter needs healing!"
A man turned and sneered at her, "All of us need a healing. Why would He heal one of your kind any ways?"
The words struck her sharply, and Daphne lowered her head, embarrassed. "Who was she, a gentile, to demand that her daughter...her Cassia be healed? But, I know He can heal her."
Daphne knew she had to do this. She cried out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."
There was no response from the Rabbi, just low mumbles from His disciples. She could hear them encourage Him to send her away. Daphne set her teeth, and prepared herself to cry out again.
But the Rabbi answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."
That simple sentence was enough for Daphne. She propelled herself through the crowd and fell at the Rabbi's feet. "Lord, help me!" she begged.
He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."
"It was a test. It had to be a test," Daphne thought as she dared to look up at the Rabbi. She closed her eyes and thought for a moment before remembering how the dogs begged at the table for even a crumb.
Boldly, she answered, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
There was a long pause and Daphne could almost hear the Rabbi start to chuckle. Finally, He responded, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted."
Daphne blinked several times before pushing herself up off the ground. The Rabbi and His disciples were already walking away, leaving her there. She pulled herself together and ran home. Knowing that the Rabbi had healed her Cassia was different than seeing it. Hastily, she pushed her way back through the market and into her home.
"Mistress," the servant girl greeted Daphne, "your daughter! She is well. She screamed and growled at an unseen presence and then went limp. It is as if the gods..."
Daphne cut the servant girl off. "No more talk of gods in this household. They have done nothing for Cassia when just a simple command from the Rabbi healed her. We will worship one God, the Most High God that the Jews serve."
