Country folk, fairly simple and plain;
Though our good looks were farmyard scented
We were clean and well dressed in the main.
My brother had grandiose notions—
(Very fond of himself some would say)—
Much given to sweet smelling lotions,
Groomed himself to the hilt every day.
He met with a lady of import,
(I thought her of superior air),
Things all changed when they started to court—
Soon our John had a new head of hair.
Of late he’d been mourning his hair-loss--
He was bald as a badger on top;
Being so used to his crown’s shiny gloss,
We were stumped at his new fangled mop.
Their wedding was planned for September
An extravagant outdoor affair—
A day I’ll forever remember,
As will everyone else who was there.
Both were dressed in their wedding day gear
And we all had scrubbed up somewhat too—
Mum would shed the occasional tear
And poor Dad wasn’t sure what to do.
The celebrant did all his readings—
Wedding vows and “I do’s” were all said—
A gust interrupted proceedings—
OOPS!! Blew the hair off the top of John’s head.
I’m sure ‘twas a measure of pay-back
And I laughed ‘till the mirth split my side:
Sure the natural world has a knack
Of deflating our ill-founded pride.
