Could it be that my life is green?
Would that be bad, or awesome, or blah
To not be sunny or blue, but in between?
Well, let’s do a survey, and make a list—
What are the meanings of the hue?
Does it have a territory, like tumultuous red
Or the peaceful/sad/watery world of blue?
To start, green enjoys some food associations:
Yummy kiwis, yucky olives, and tart lime,
Beans, peas, okra, and jalapeños,
One could make a long list in record time.
Lots of spices are green, and highly prized—
acquisition of them once made men wealthy.
Green plants of every size and description
are now utilized to get us more healthy.
And mint, a leaf with a flavor near divine
Has varieties, mellow to sharp, I kid you not
My two favorite uses are the breath mint, and
Flavoring sweetened tea, whether iced or hot.
Green boasts treasures, in colors deep to light
Jade, and peridot, which fetch a lot when sold.
Aquamarine ownership has to be split with blue;
Emeralds belong to green alone, gorgeous to behold.
Ireland might come to mind when thinking of green,
With leprechauns and shamrocks all around.
I’ve never been there, but maybe someday, because
In my ancestry the Irish are found!
My mind turns from foods, spices, gems, and places,
toward associations--more poetic, less concrete.
Green brings to mind youngness and vitality,
renewal and health, with the list still incomplete.
One meaning of today’s word is “not-yet-ripe,”
As applied to a fruit or a person—-as in a rookie.
Being described as “green” can mean one is eco-friendly
Or nauseated, with no interest in eating a cookie.
Moving deeper into meanings, I stumble on a problem...
Which has to make the survey, and be discussed.
Green, in gist, has a link to jealousy and envy--
“the green-eyed monster:” face it, I must.
Is my life green, with any of these connotations?
What did my survey manage to define?
I see flavors, and tangibles, and places,
but is there more, something to divine?
Yes, I can be flavorful, like foods and spices,
Showing different moods, sometimes acting like a fool.
I can also be tart, with an untamed tongue,
I’d prefer to be like mint, quiet and cool.
Vital? Young? Experiencing renewal?
These thoughts almost make me stop and laugh.
But then, I realize that in my Christian walk
I’m still being directed, by His staff.
Like the lovely emerald, flashing and deep,
I have great value, in His eyes,
He died for me, and helps me conquer envy
I can feel like I’m a prize.
