Naomi took a deep breath as she loosened her scarf and took off her mittens. But what if what Gina had to say shook Naomi's faith to the core? What if it was true? Then what?
Naomi bit her lip as she stuffed the mittens into her parka’s pockets. She made her way to the counter to order a mug of coffee. If it was true, there was nothing else she could do with it but accept it. If God chose to bring Gentiles into His kingdom, then there was little else she could say.
Idly, she stood there, waiting for the barista to finish her order. The semester had but two days left, and something inside of Naomi had to find out what was so different about this Christian than the others.
Mug of coffee in one hand and a plate with two chocolate-glazed donuts in the other, Naomi made her way over to Gina. She hesitated at the sight of Gina's bowed head. Even if they were of different religions, the motions were still the same.
So, Naomi waited until Gina lifted her head again before asking, "May I join you?"
Gina looked up and smiled, not moving to tuck the Bible away from Naomi's sight. Naomi realized she was interrupting Gina's reading time. She put the plate down before sliding into the chair across from her friend.
There was a long, awkward pause before Naomi finally cleared her throat and blurted out, "You're different from all of my other roommates."
Gina coughed several times before managing. "I am? How?"
"You're the first not to force Christianity on me. You also want to come to the synagogue with me...and there’s just something different about you and I want to know what."
Gina studied her for a long moment. "I am different. I was raised in a Jewish home but something changed in me my senior year in high school. One of my best friends never pushed me to accept what she believed. She just loved and debated me into the Almighty’s arms."
"So, why are you so different?"
Gina laughed, "I believe in reaching out to my friends with God’s love. Here, let me show you." She put her cup to the side and opened up the Scriptures. Naomi frowned and dug into her bag, retrieving a notebook and a pen. She would want notes. Slowly, they worked their way through the prophets, examining their words before moving to the New Testament, to find the prophets’ words coming to life.
Naomi leaned back after scribbling for several pages.
"Okay, so what are the odds that one man could fulfill all of these prophecies?" Gina asked, a grin spreading across her face. Naomi laughed, and threw her pen at her.
"Okay, so, you’ve shown me the proof so, now what?" The question hung in the air for a long moment. Then Gina smiled. "That's up to you. I've shown you what convinced me the Messiah has come already."
Naomi went quiet, chewing on her bottom lip before looking at her friend. "If you speak the truth about the Messiah, I’m assuming there is still hope for me."
"There is. The Messiah is knocking on your heart’s door. Will you let Him in, Naomi?"
Naomi lowered her gaze to her empty mug. She knew if her parents found out she was even considering this she’d be disowned. But the truth was worth everything.
She looked into Gina’s eyes and stated. "I'm in. Tell me what I need to do."
