Into the forest glade,
When distant music touched my ears
And did my soul pervade.
Enthralled, I searched to find the source
Of such a joyful song.
‘Til all at once I saw a stream
Leap joyfully along.
The glinting waters curled and swirled
Releasing bubbling notes.
The music filled the air as full
As near one hundred throats!
Who could the stream be singing for?
It wasn’t just for me.
I’d just arrived upon the scene
To hear the stream so free.
And then to add to questions
That the singing steam did spark,
A flash of yellow caught my gaze
And drew it to a lark.
Upon a branch he bowed and rocked
Until as if on cue,
He let his song float on the breeze
As my own wonder grew.
For why and how could this small bird
Make music rare and sweet,
Arranged with every note in place
To make the song complete?
And then as if to lead me on
The breeze played on the grass,
And whispered such a fragile tune
No other could surpass.
“Why do you sing?” I cried aloud.
“And who gave you your song?”
As nature seemed to then burst forth
In concert sweet and strong.
“You’ve finally voiced the question
That I longed to hear you raise.”
I spun around to face the One
And knelt beneath His gaze.
“I gave each song you’ve heard today.
And nature heeds my voice
By singing praise at my command
To point you to a choice.”
“Will you continue listening
To nature’s poignant plea
And only praise its song alone
Without a thought for Me?”
“Or will you look beyond the stars
That sing with one accord,
And choose to sing the song I give
As praises to your Lord?”
In awe I listened to His words
And knew beyond a doubt
I longed to sing to this great King
Eternity throughout.
“Oh Lord,” I cried, “my life is Yours.
Your glory fills my gaze.”
He smiled, reached out, and filled my heart
With melodies of praise.
A song so new burst from my lips
To glorify my King.
But then I knew what pleased Him most
Was that my heart could sing.
