How Do You Spell Joy?
When I receive a brand new toy
Or learn another skill
I feel a temporary joy---
I dance and can’t sit still.
I never will forget the day
My laptop did arrive.
I found an online writing class;
My writing was revived.
At last, I thought, I’ll write my book,
An author I would be.
Then I contracted writer’s block.
My joy began to flee.
I bought an easel, donned a smock.
Now art was my forte.
I found some joy in painting birds
And sculpting them in clay.
But when my art work failed to bring
The joy that I once knew,
I sighed and asked, “Just what spells joy?”
I did not have a clue.
I then turned to my stash of yarn
And learned a brand new skill.
I taught myself to knit a scarf.
It gave me a brief thrill.
I knitted, then, another one,
And thought that possibly,
By giving it to someone else
It would bring joy to me?
I took it to the county home
While singing with my church
And spied a lonely woman there
Who on a chair was perched.
She stroked the scarf and said through tears,
“My skills are less than few.
I wish that I could knit a scarf
And give one, just like you.”
“Excuse me, Ma’m, I’ll be right back,”
I told her, darting out.
There was a bubbling in my soul---
I felt an urge to shout!
I ran back home and grabbed some yarn
As well as more supplies---
Some knitting needles of size eight---
A good beginner’s size.
When I returned to share my craft,
I found, at last, true joy.
It is the kind that overspills
For others to enjoy.
It’s then that I did realize
That joy is spelled this way….
That’s JOY that comes to stay!
