She was in for a long flight, heading home from London to Sydney. As the plane taxied along the runway Jane felt herself getting hotter and hotter. She peeled off her scarf and jacket. That was better. A bit.
Her time in London had been fabulous. Shopping was her passion and the clothes in London had an edge on the Sydney ones. She had found little boutiques and spent a lot. Shoes, jackets, pants and more.
The one thing she hadn't thought about was how she was going to get all these new clothes home. She easily filled her suitcase and her carry-on bag, discarding a few of her old things. But that still left her with three dresses, three pairs of pants and two jackets.
Janet googled How to take a lot of clothes on a plane, and found some helpful advice. Wear them. The airlines don't weigh you, just your baggage. Bingo! That was it. She would wear several layers.
Fortunately London weather was cool for October so it wasn't too difficult to wear the pants one on top of the other, and the dresses. The jackets were a bit harder but she slung one over her shoulder and wore the other.
As the plane rose into the sky she felt the heat increasing. The air-conditioning wasn't designed to cope with people dressed for the snow. She felt her face flaming up. As soon as the fasten-seat belts sign was switched off she made a dash for the toilet.
'Sorry. Could you please let me out.' Vera and the man next to him stood to let her out. In the toilet she peeled off the jacket, a dress and a pair of pants and and headed back. She reached up and stuffed them in the overhead locker.
As time went on the heat began to build up again. She fanned herself with the dinner menu.
“You all right dear?” Vera asked.”Are you feeling okay?”
“Yes thanks, I'm fine,” said Jane, but she felt awful. Two dresses and two pairs of pants were too much. She waited till after their dinner was served. Not that she could enjoy it.
“Sorry. I need to go to the bathroom again,” she told Vera.
“Do you think I should call someone?” Vera asked. “You're obviously hot and probably have a touch of the runs. The stewards might be able to give you something.”
'No thanks. I'll be okay.” Jane headed to the toilet and took another dress and pair of pants off. She tried to hide them as she returned to her seat. She pretended to be getting something from her bag but stuffed the clothes into the overhead locker again. Phew! Only one layer. She sat down and closed her eyes.
“Sleep. It's the best medicine.” said Vera. “Just make sure you drink enough..”
'Mmmm.” Jane kept her eyes closed and hoped that Vera would get the hint. She didn't want to talk.
The man in the aisle seat stood up and pulled a lap-top from the overhead locker. But a cascade of clothes came with it.
“These yours?” He glared at Jane. “You should have them in a bag.”
“Sorry,” said Jane, and this time her face reddened with embarrassment rather than heat. “I'll put them under the seat.” She pulled all her loose clothes down and stuffed them under the seat in front.
Vera was looking at her strangely. She thought the look was pity.
“I have a fold-up bag in my bag,' she said. “You can use that until we get to Sydney.
“Thank you.” Vera rummaged around and pulled out a bright yellow fold-up bag. A temporary solution.
The rest of the journey went uneventfully but as they neared Sydney Jane knew what she had to do. She left it as long as she could and then took Vera's bag to the toilet and put all her extra clothes back on.
Vera had finally twigged to what was going on. “Has it been worth it?” she asked.
“What do you mean?” said Jane.
“Well, are those clothes worth giving up your comfort?”
“Absolutely!” said Jane as her face turned red and she counted down the minutes till landing. She staggered off the plane into a Sydney heatwave.
