As I looked out the window, I noticed a black cloud hovering over the street nearby.
"Hmmm…didn't know it was going to rain today, better close the windows."
I called to my husband to check the car windows, and waited for a reply.
"Honey, where are you?" I slipped out the front screen door and gasped in horror. I saw Rich laying on the ground covered with bees!
"Oh my gosh!" My heart seemed to stop beating, and I felt weak and dizzy. I ran to him instinctively, but heard him yelling for me to stay away.
"I rushed in the house to call 911, as I saw my son running for shelter towards his car.
"Help! My family is in trouble!" screaming as I gripped my phone.
"Calm down, give me your address, we need to have it…what is the problem?" said an alert operator.
Trying to speak, " my husband has been attacked by bees, and they have covered him outside. Please help me!"
"We will be there asap! Stay inside and close the windows and doors. Do NOT try to rescue him."
I looked outside at my husband on the ground and I felt nauseous.
"Please God, don't let him die, he loves you so, and I do too!"
It was the worst thing I have ever had to do, to let him lie there without trying to help him. I remembered the verse in the Bible about walking through the valley of death, and that God would comfort me, Psalm 23:4. I could feel myself coming apart, when I felt a strong sense of someone next to me. I looked around the room. Suddenly, I stopped shaking and heard the sirens coming up the road.
"Please God, let everything be Ok."
I watched out the window as paramedics rushed over to the lifeless-like body on the front lawn. They quickly sprayed foam across the area, and lifted my husband into the ambulance. Kevin, my son, was safe from the bees in his car, and motioned for me to get in to ride to the hospital.
With tears in my eyes, I grabbed Kevin's broad shoulders. "I'm so scared, what if he doesn't make it?"
"Mom, with the faith you and Dad have, God is surely on your side; don't worry, it will be Ok."
He was trying to think positive for me, but I could tell he had been crying. Kevin was an unstable believer who lost his way a long time ago. I had hoped something would bring him back to God.
I met the doctor in the hallway of the hospital, afraid to ask how Rich was doing. "Will he be Ok?"
The doctor patted me on the back and said, "I've never seen anything like this... hundreds of bees attacked your husband, but none of them stung him. Tiny indentations marked where they landed on him, but no evidence of a sting. Besides a rise in blood pressure, he will be just fine! It is like something protected him with a shield that kept him from getting hurt. He is a very lucky man!"
Kevin and I looked at each other with confusion and joy. He squeezed me tightly, and whispered in my ear.
"See, I told you, God protected him, and that was because of your faith! Thanks Mom! … maybe I will start going to church with you guys!"
