Dear Pastor Johnson,
My mother says that God speaks to her, but I have never heard him talk. I thought you would know better than anyone. Does God talk?
Yes, Lily, God does talk. The thing is, you can’t hear him with your ears. You hear him with your heart. You may not think it is possible to listen with your heart, but that’s exactly what you did last Sunday night when you went to the altar and asked Jesus to save you.
Also, Lily, God talks to people who want to hear him. He speaks to us through the Bible just as surely as I am speaking to you through this letter. But to hear what someone has to say in a letter, you have to read the letter. God’s letter to us has sixty-six books, with 1,189 chapters. That’s a lot of talking to people who are willing to listen.
He speaks to us through the majesty of his creation. Can you watch the sun rise or set with its display of orange and red and sometimes even pink painted across the sky, and not hear God’s voice? When you see the ocean waves crashing to the shore, can you not hear him say, “It is good?”
When the leaves turn vibrant colors and fall from the trees, only to return the following spring, God speaks to us. He tells us that we must die in order to live again. You see, Lily, death is not permanent for the leaves, and neither is it for us.
That little nudging in your heart that lets you know if your actions are right or wrong, that is God. He is talking to you in that still, small voice that’s not unlike a friend whispering in your ear.
But the most amazing way he talks to us, Lily, you will see when you look in the mirror. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. You are his child. People may tell you that you have some of the same characteristics as your mother and father, but you also resemble the God of the universe. Next time you see your reflection, be still and listen. Perhaps you will hear God say, “You are special, you are unique, and you are loved.”
Yes, Lily, God surely does talk to us.
