The sun had disappeared behind clouds draped over the mountains in the western horizon. The sky was filled with a myriad of reds, oranges, and violets. Dave was too preoccupied with quickly cutting the field to notice the striking beauty of the dusk.
In his rear view mirror, he could see the silos, their concrete walls turning shades of blue. It was just him and Larry running the farm now. With each passing year, Dad would spend more time down in sunny, hot Arizona. He finally quit the farm a few years ago, turning it wholly over to Larry and him. So Dad and Mom moved across the lane into the small trailer, and they rented out the old house to a farmhand. Most of the time his folks weren’t around, they were being too accustomed to the retirement life on the other side of the border.
Dave looked out at the hay field, carefully turning the tractor to cut another swath. All of this land belonged to his grandfather Norman who homesteaded here back in 1900.
Grandpa couldn't have picked better land. The rains came almost every afternoon from the mountains. They rarely suffered drought. There was the occasional hail, but they always made it through. Thanks to God.
Dave poured some more coffee, and drank slowly, thoughtfully. A few years ago in the middle of a dry spring, his entire family all stood in a circle holding hands in front of the barn. They prayed for rain that afternoon, but with a more aggressive approach. Dave took authority over the drought, and commanded the rains to come. It was uncharacteristic of him to act so militant, being from a mild mannered evangelical faith. Yet somehow an anger rose within him and those words flowed out. He'd been reading stories of other believers who took authority in their desperate situations. He'd thought he'd give it a go.
Within thirty minutes dark blue rain clouds appeared over the mountains and they delivered much needed moisture. Praise God! Funny thing was, their neighbors didn't get much. Dave smiled at how that story unfolded, and the joy his insides felt as he played a part in a divine miracle.
That was a few years ago, and life had been pretty uneventful since. Seeding in the spring, harvest in the late summer, repairs and vacations in the winter. The hum-drum life of a farmer.
Suddenly Dave heard a buzzing sound around him. It was too mechanical sounding to be flies.
"No," muttered Dave aloud. "Not equipment failure, not now!” He shut off the radio and carefully listened. The buzzing steadily continued, coming from outside the cab. He stopped the tractor. The buzzing still continued. He turned off the tractor engine, expecting to hear silence, again Dave heard the strange buzzing. The hair on the back of his neck stood up, and the cab filled with a ghostly, creepy ambiance.
Dave opened the cab door, stuck his head out and nervously peered around. The buzzing was louder, and definitely not mechanical. Relived at that, Dave stepped out into the cooling summer air and hopped down on the waist-high hay field. The buzzing sound was clearly heard above him, Dave stepped away from the tractor cautiously and turned to look up.
In the darkening sky above, hovered three blood-red lights. They were not blinking like aircraft, which commonly flew overhead. Dave’s heart filled with fear, and he wanted to run. Instead a strong inner voice reminded him that perfect love cast out fear.
Dave took a deep breath and remembered the experience with the hail storm.
“I take authority over you,” Dave stammered. “In the name of Jesus.”
The inner voice reminded him to speak louder, with authority. Dave looked directly at the lights, raised his right index finger and pointed. In a loud voice, he repeated, “I take authority over you in the mighty name of Jesus!”
The lights immediately darted off like flies. Dave watched them speed away into the black night of the eastern sky. His heart was warmly flooding with joy. His faith was strengthened, in awe of God, who would include him in an exciting role of bringing the Kingdom to Earth.
