And tickled me like butterflies,
I prayed “This child is in your hands.”
“God, guide her steps. She is a gift from you;
She is yours.”
Sounded great from my lips,
But my heart had a different perspective;
It saw the first time you climbed out of your crib
and almost fell down the stairs…
It saw the possibilities,
what could happen as you grew and gained freedom,
inch by inch.
So I conceived a plan.
I’d seek out the best builders in the world,
have them build a tower.
This tower would be unlike any other tower;
it would have no entrance and no exit.
It would have everything you could ever need,
so you’d never want to leave.
No one could enter it—
no girl, boy, bully, stranger, thief, or friend
could ever come into your life and hurt you.
You’d never have your feelings crushed by cruel words.
You’d never be jealous of a beautiful classmate
or envious of the clothes she wears.
No one could tease you or call you names.
Inside the tower, you would never scrape your knees
or twist an ankle.
You would never get sick.
Germs could never penetrate the stone walls.
The thick walls would protect you from all storms.
At the sound of strong winds and booming thunder,
you’d snuggle, cozy and safe,
reading books by the fireplace.
The walls would separate you from the world.
You’d never hear swearing,
or feel anxious.
Oh, precious walls.
This tower thing was done before—
The tower plan failed.
Rapunzel let the prince climb her hair
and get her out of there in the end.
No one wants to be trapped.
So I have to let you see the world.
The golden forsythia and pink azalea in spring,
The whiteness of winter.
The beauty of a blue sky
touching the tropical ocean.
Friends and love, but also anger and pain.
You may stub your toe a hundred times,
lose a race, lose a friend, get sick
or feel your heart break.
And I pray again.
“This child is yours. A gift from you, Lord.
Please watch over her and guide her steps toward heaven.”
So I can’t build a tower
and shelter you from this imperfect world,
but I can surrender my fears
to the One who has the power to help you.
You are free in His hands.
