Over lunch, in a dimly lit secluded corner, a love struck young man and woman share a tantalizing mixture. From a menu of appetizers, they munch on oysters & ‘holy hunches.’ Starry eyed, they sense their friendship blossoming through companionship. It is deepening into sustaining relationship.

Testing waters of traditional courtship, man and his prospective bride board the ship of covenant commitment. Hoisting their anchor, they cast off from shore, setting their sails upon the turbulent sea of matrimony.

Stage #1 ‘Friendship’ (smiles, casual conversation)

Stage #2 ‘Companionship’ (eye-contact, hand holding, common interests)

Stage #3 ‘Relationship’ (becoming inseparable, concern, commitment)

Stage #4 ‘Partnership’ (‘I now pronounce you husband and wife!’)

Stage #5 ‘Hardship’ (sympathy, empathy, courage, hope)

Stage #6 ‘Kinship’ (as one, finish each others' sentences, begin to look alike)

Stage #7 ‘Citizenship’ (‘till death do us part…’ As one, they long for forwarding their home address to heaven.)

I would have liked to see about a thousand more words to this story. I'd love to see how this young couple lives out the interesting set of stages you've set before us in this piece. thoght-provoking, especially in today's culture of anything goes. Always good to bring things back to basics. Thanks!

Clever, concise and constructive material. I concur with the desire for more words, and maybe each word could be a chapter heading for a book called "Ships" in the Night:-( (and the Day,)
