Demure and blushing, ever so sweet,
her gown, it covered from throat to feet.
Of smoothly wove satin and purest white lace
The veil, light and airy o’er her beautiful face.

A generation beyond comes the next blushing bride
in long sleeves and high neck as Dad walks beside.
Her dress she will keep to bestow to another
its long train and full skirt demure as her mother.

Styles change, so does fashion. Ankles show, so do knees
Split skirts are fine, strapless bodice - no sleeves.
Change is good, we’re all free to do just as we please
modesty’s old and we’re new, give a ho and a heave

The bride wants aquamarine, what’s wrong with that?
Her skirt will be short. Ostrich feathers, her hat.
Lacy and sheer and cut down to - where?
What, you don’t have it in aq-marine? Never care.

White will do just as well, make it shocking
We watch, we’re delighted and yes, we’re blushing.
Her dress will surely be the talk of the town.
But after all, what’s the harm, it’s only a gown.

Of course she should have what she wants. It’s her day.
She’s the bride, she’s in charge She must have her way.
It will be mighty and memorable, loud and large.
The biggest, the finest, most expensive by far.

If of me an opinion is asked, why I’ll say
Yes it’s fine, yes it’s perfect, there’s no other way.
Yet in the frays of my mind, a memory
of an emperor and new clothes in his day, for a fee.

I don’t recall, did they say, Sire, your clothes
the new ones we’ve heard all about, we suppose,
Uh, your new clothes, are they about?
We fear we are seeing you - clothing without.

No, I’m wrong, I’m old fashioned
I must hold my tongue.
She’s young, she knows more
I’ll just raise her my thumb.

But, I see ‘modesty’ and shyness - demure - they’re gone.
In their place clomps a dromedary, no, that is wrong.
The beast who is here, the beast in plain view
The beast in this room is a pachyderm, named Phew-Phew.

You have a delightful tongue in cheek sense of humor. I think you did a wonderful job of painting a vivid picture. You also nailed the topic in quite a fresh way.

Quite clever, powerful message! So sad the sinking morals and modesty of this day and age.

Hooray! You did a marvelous job with this poem. I loved your crisp rhymes. The cadence at first was stellar, but shifted just a bit, which is okay, but would have been even more dynamic if the shift came at the moment of the story teller's dismay. But it's much better than I could do. Wonderful read!

Ah - modernity. How soon before black becomes the new bridal attire? I enjoyed this, while saddened by it . . .

Wow, what a message you packed in this. How clothing styles change, but we clothes (I mean, close) our mouths and say nothing.

Congratulations on a well deserved EC.

Comical with a punch. Great writing!
