Young ladies dreamt upon their cots
Each wished for her Sir Loves-Me-Lots
and the happiness that’d prevail
In this village lacking cheer
Were men who dreamt of someone dear
To share their lives with year to year
and the happiness that’d prevail
The black sheep of this village rare
Grew tired of jabs and haughty stares
Forced to leave their family’s care
each found one sunny vale
A little background I must share,
for them it seemed life wasn’t fair--
Birdie’s voice squawked and squeaked
no one could bear to hear her speak
Boney Bart’s long, pointy nose
poked people during comes and goes
Crank’s bushy brows furrowed tight
scared young and old, day and night
Francene’s list of allergies
sprayed townsfolk with her ev’ry sneeze--
And so between their sighs and moans
each outcast left their family home
Birdie, one day fetching flowers
Found a book with mighty power
Intrigued she read for several hours
of a love that would not fail
She hid the book, black leather-bound
Exactly where it had been found
Then put a marker upside down
next to the floral trail
Next morn before the sunlight spread
Birdie scurried from her bed
Down to the scented meadow fled
then shared instructive tales
There’s nothing this God cannot do
He wants the best for me and you
He knows each heart clearly through
and the beauty yet unveiled
His miracles--plainly in sight
Warm golden sun, jeweled skies at night
Whispering trees and birds in flight
each breath that we exhale
Bart’s pointy nose chose a verse
In Proverbs nine, at ten (the verse)*
They read it slowly, then rehearsed
it’s impact in detail
John, three:sixteen*, Crank’s brows relaxed
To learn of love, in truth unmatched
Through Jesus’ death, God’s plan had hatched
each soul freed from its jail
The group pondered parables
The narrow gate, things terrible
To lose their lives--unbearable
this thought turned faces pale
The Bible now rested on Francene’s knee
She read of heaven’s eternity
. . .no sickness, no sorrow. . .(no allergies!)
and they rejoiced with each detail
Bible experts--no, not they
But they embraced to live His way
And taught new comer cast-aways
in the humbleness of the vale
*Proverbs 9:10 Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in understanding. NLT
*John 3:16 For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. NKJV
