Were not painted
By the knife you used,
But by the razor-sharp edge
Of a shard of glass.
The slivers that cut your skin
Are not the scattered remains
Of the broken vase,
But the razor-sharp petals
Of the once delicate rose
Crushed in the fall.
The trampled petals
Are not the begrimed remnants
Of a fragrant flower,
But the razor-sharp fragments
Of your broken heart.
What knife followed
Those stripes on your wrist,
Repainting and recreating
The portrait of your soul?
What shards carved
The stripes on your wrist,
Engraving the dirge
Your heart has murmured
In the ashes that remain?
What petals pierce your skin,
Portraying the beauty that once was,
Reminding you every day
Of the love you once embraced?
I will never understand the depths
Of the pain you bear.
I cannot paint over
The stripes on your wrist.
I cannot glue together
The broken vase
Or resurrect
Your crushed rose.
All I can do is pick up the petals,
One at a time,
And hope that my love
Can piece them back together.
