night descending upon vast sea waters
brings recall of another darkness
glowing warmth of charcoal fire
searing pain of shattering faith
lost in swirling smoke drifting heavenward
while shame pours down onto the dusty earth
changed by a moment of fear
rhythms of our boat gliding across Tiberian waters
bring not the familiar peace of yesteryear
this night we toil for an empty net
comradery comforting in uncertain times
yet ever aware of His absence
remembering His call at Galilee
“Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.”*
abandoning our nets
leaving sea behind
to follow Him
changed by a moment of faith
sunlight paints the darkened waters bright
along the shore a voice calls to His children
leading the way to a burgeoning net
“It is the Lord,” John proclaims*
and I go toward Him in the waters
leaving net and sea behind, once again
for a place at His side
changed by a moment of joy
gentle sea breezes hasten me to the One
carefully tending the glowing charcoal fire
motioning us toward His provision
of fresh fish and bread
“Come and have breakfast,” He says*
and we quickly ensue
breaking bread together once more
our smiles telling tales of kindred souls
sharing the joy of reunion
when my eyes meet His I discern His forgiveness; I am
changed by this moment of grace
finishing our feast, He turns toward me
asking “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”*
not once , but three times
of course I love Him
once walking on water to reach Him
swimming the seas to be now at His side
“Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”*
faith rising with each affirmation
near the glowing warmth of the charcoal fire
praises of my heart mingle with the swirling smoke drifting heavenward
this I know
I am loved
nourished
restored
to feed His sheep as I have been fed and
changed by this Vessel of Love
