Too many lacking the means to buy food
So dumpster diving Dena dared to intrude
At each food chain target, she became bold
From her step stool the grabber reached food barely old
Straight to the needy to unload her bounty
Now folks wouldn’t starve throughout Dillon County
Affectionately known as Dena the Diver
An angel God sent who brings fruits and fiber
Peppers, celery and sweet onions too
Sautéed together became veggie stew
Scouting the dumpsters for chickens, all baked
Humbling herself for each neighbors sake
Dena herself cooked meals like a pro
To nourish folks whose spirits were low
I’m just one person, but a difference I’m making
By feeding the poor so their stomachs stop aching
Food pantries are hurting, their shelves barely stocked
Hunger is rising--we all should be shocked
Just give what you can, no matter how small
Better to help one than not help at all
In kindness pick up some groceries and pray
“God, help me feed the most hungry today.
Open my heart, make me very aware
To be a good servant, to love and to care.”
This entry was inspired by a true news story I recently watched on television. What a shame that the big chain grocery stores aren’t partnering with local food banks to help stomp out hunger in their own backyards. Is it the bureaucratic red tape, rules and regulations that get in the way of helping those in need today? The real dumpster diver was taped as she retrieved food still good enough to eat and distribute to the food banks in her neighborhood. Of course the names of the stores and food banks were not spoken during the interview (and Dena is not the diver’s real name). The point is that people are starving in a nation where hunger should not even exist.
Note: The dumpster diver shared that no one had ever gotten ill from any of the food she collected and distributed to the food banks; or people she personally delivered food to or ate herself.
