The summer breeze combed through her hair
And softly caressed her face
She closed her eyes and drew a breath
Thanking God for their special place
So many seasons proudly danced
When partnering two hearts as one
Beneath a maple’s verdant arms
Autumn colors and winter’s sun

A smile played across her lips
As she gently spoke Zeke’s name
Spreading the faded denim quilt
Forever love--still aflame
The wicker basket, a wedding gift
So simple, but duly cherished
Held a lunch today just for one
For Zeke’s earthly life had perished

Remember Dear. . . she spoke aloud--
A nearby robin cocked its head
And even hopped a bit closer as if
To listen to the words yet said
Tender memories skimmed the ripples
Of the meandering babbling brook
Then disappeared like children’s bubbles
Catching lazy winds and wide-eyed looks

Reclining against the Maple’s strength
Slowing munching smoked ham on rye
She recited some favored scriptures
To cottony clouds in the summer sky
The afternoon blessing--sweet content
Now her heart was veiled with peace
A picnic in their special place
Had brought needed relief

And so when weather did permit
Before the barren days of winter
Picnics served to ease her loss
While God’s comfort spread within her
She put to rest her fears and doubts
Of an empty life ahead
She listened to her Father’s voice
Which gave her hope instead

I like that first line! Nice imagery!

This is such a sweet, sad, lovely, romantic piece! The whole thing has such a peaceful feel to it. I also appreciate the hopeful way it ends.

This is beautiful. Though I haven't lost my husband, all three of my kids are moving onto a new phase of their lives and I'm struggling. Your words offered me comfort and hope.
