Secure and happy, no one can hurt you. Nothing can take away your tender smile, your pure joy,
as God intended.
Oh Lord, those teenage days are coming fast, so I write you a future letter in my mind . . .
Dear Bumblebee Girl (your favorite nickname this week),
The days are coming fast when you’ll relinquish stinging superpowers, and your dolls will be tossed in good will boxes, (the dolls with hair and all body parts), when you’ll trade in your bee costume for make-up. And why? To impress some dude with cute eyes, maybe gorgeous almond eyes with lashes, and muscles the size of Hercules that he is sure to flex in your presence. He may even smile at you as if you are the angel he’s been waiting for all his teenage years.
Don’t rush to him. Don’t let him in your heart before God teaches you what real love is.
“Mommy, would you like some tea? And a fairy cookie?”
“Sure.” I pretend to sip and munch on a green Playdoh ball and say, “Yum, you’re a marvelous cook.”
You may think you know all by fifteen years. You’ll say you’re in love because you feel butterfly tickles whenever you think of him. Your senses awaken at the sound of his voice. You’ll believe him when he says, “This Justin Bieber song makes me think of you.” Remember the dude is steeped in teenage hormones. He’ll say what you want to hear, but listen carefully; when he talks, he reveals his true nature.
Guard your heart now!
“Let’s put our crowns on since the queen is coming.”
I slip the paper crown onto my head, knowing the green glitter will linger on my clothes and hair. Jordan’s crown falls to her nose, so I adjust it with tape.
“That’s better. Now the queen can see your sparkling eyes.”
If you open your heart too soon, and he turns his gaze toward another pretty face, you’ll feel a corkscrew twist a hole in your heart. But the damage is not permanent. Your life is not over. God is an expert surgeon, able to repair any broken heart. Someday you’ll realize that boy was a passing dude who didn’t deserve your heart.
“Mommy, look … here comes the queen.”
From behind the blanket tent, a little hand holds out a bouncing Barbie clothed in her finest gold trimmed dress.
A sweet, familiar voice calls out from the tent: “I am the queen and I’d like some tea, please.”
“Why of course, Your Highness.” I pour Queen Barbie a cup of invisible tea as high as her knees.
Your heart beats strong, pumps life through your body, yet can be as fragile as glass. Let Jesus hold your heart because you can trust Him; unlike the dude, He will never let you down. He can prepare the perfect guy for you—a prince who doesn’t mind washing dishes—if you keep your heart pure. Be patient; your daddy won’t let you date until you’re thirty anyway.
Jordan leans Barbie against the chair in an unnatural position for a queen. “She needs a king.” She digs through her toy box and yanks out a floppy panda bear. “Po is a nice king.”
“Nice to meet you.” I curtsy and kiss his paw. “I think the princess looks sleepy. It’s time we pack up the kingdom until tomorrow.”
“Okay. I think the queen is falling asleep. Maybe the king is boring.”
I tuck Jordan under her covers and pray for sweet dreams and happiness.
“Mommy, Jesus is in my heart, so I’ll always be happy.”
“You’re right.” This is a moment I want to remember, I want her to remember.
You may be tempted to wish you were prettier or smarter or more like a movie star; don’t let anyone or anything come between you and the Lord, not envy, pride, or any dude.
God’s word says it best: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…Psalm 139: 13-14.
I’ll end my letter with your own words at five years-old: “Keep Jesus in your heart, so you’ll always be happy.”
Bumblebee Mom who learned these lessons first.
