Dusk turns to night.
The sky lights up with colors
As fireworks fill the sky,
Bursting forth with light and sound.
A celebration
Of independence.
Red for hardiness and valor;
White for purity and innocence;
Blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
A celebration of freedom.
Freedom to worship
Freedom of speech
Freedom from tyranny.
The price was high.
Many fought to grant freedom.
Many still fight today to preserve it.
They give their lives.
Freedom isn't free,
But it is precious.

A far greater freedom exists
That transcends earthly bounds
To the eternal.
Day turns to night.
A cruel cross,
An empty tomb.
A celebration
Of life eternal.
Red for the blood He shed
White for our hearts made pure as snow
Blue for baptism, the public declaration
Of independence
From death.
And dependence on Him.
Life eternal
Living with Him.
The price was high.
He gave His life to grant us freedom
Many still fight for His name
And die for His sake
True freedom,
Found only through Him.
It is not freedom on earth.
It is far more precious.

Well done. I particularily like the part:
Blue for baptism, the public declaration
Of independence
From death.

This free verse is pregnant with poignancy. Yes, there is the most wonderful freedom, for us all, that comes through Jesus!
Thanks for your meaningful and lovely piece.

This is so beautiful. I loved how how showed the different colors and their meanings. I was also impressed with the comparison of Independence day with Easter. There have been so many entries about Easter this week but your POV was creative and fresh.

I always find a good comparison helps to bring across the 'point'. this one certainly did.
Verna Cole Mitchell 04/18/12
Excellent analogy in your poem
