A quiet hush descended on the gathered company,
The hum of conversation ceased, all waited quietly,
The conference hall was full, in prayerful expectation,
All waited for wise words, profound, with full anticipation.
The familiar figure took the stage, with Bible, notes in hand,
He spoke: ‘I first will share with you, something I had not planned,
Before we search the Scriptures and I speak to you of mission,
I’d like to tell you of a man who lived the great commission.’
Some twenty seven years ago, ambitious, young, with zeal,
I travelled to our capital, my fortune there to seal.
My life was full, my pockets too, I walked the streets of gold,
But money was my master with its vice-like stranglehold.
One unforgettable new day, it seemed my chance to meet
A quiet stranger standing on the corner of Park Street:
‘Sir, may I ask one question,’ he asked with loving plea,
‘Just one thing I would ask you - Where you’ll spend eternity?’
I hurried quickly on my way, to immerse myself in life,
But the question burrowed deep inside and pierced me like a knife.
Where would I spend eternity, my heart cried out within
As I felt the weight of judgement and I knew the hold of sin.
Then God, in mercy, found me and He showed me Christ had died
To save, forgive and cleanse me, then to keep me at His side.
I never, ever, saw again the stranger on Park Street
But took the baton up and preached to everyone I’d meet.’
‘Over the years, from time to time, I share this testimony
And tell of him who’d asked me where I’d spend eternity.
And I have met with those who’ve asked ‘The man upon Park Street?
I met him too, and that was where the Saviour I did meet.’
This quiet man, his name unknown, his life a simple mission,
To be a signpost and a light, to live the great commission.
I prayed that I might find this man before my journey’s end
And tell him that to many he’s a loved and mutual friend.’
‘This very day , I visited the hospital and whilst there
God granted me a miracle in answering my prayer.
Amazed I stopped and looked upon, through misted haze of tears,
A precious face that I’d not seen for twenty seven years:
‘Long long ago, on Park Street, you spoke to me a word’,
He sadly sighed, feebly replied, ‘I’ve never, ever heard
If there was one who listened, if in this world of strife,
One soul turned to the Saviour and found eternal life.’
I took his wizened, wrinkled hand and held it tight in mine;
‘Dear precious friend, your words were used to save a host of men.’
I told him of the ones I’d met, the precious souls he’d won,
Who in eternity He’d meet, before God’s precious Son.
His watery eyes with brightness shone, ‘To God be praised’ said he
‘I’m ready now to rest in sleep, and meet eternity.’
So friends, remember, take the Word, wherever He does send
And speak of Christ to all you meet, your dearest mutual Friend.
