Blest This Assurance
Hear the drumbeat of little minds
Knowing nothing of defeat
Marching on with hope sublime
Conquering one small milestone at a time.
Tiny fingers grasp the surface
Holding on and tipping up
Then move on to greater conquest
No more bottle, just the cup.
Hear them say with full assurance
I can do it by myself
Find a stool and reach the shelf
I don’t really need your help.
Hold the string and push it through
Every hole of all my shoes.
Tie the knot and make a bow
Even though I’m very slow.
Count to ten
Then backwards too
Tell the world
What’s two plus two.
Red, yellow, blue and green
I know all my colors
But purple is the one l like
Better than all the others.
When I’m six
I’ll ride a bike
Push the pedals
As fast as I like.
And though my name is very long
The one my father gave me
I can spell the shorter one
You see, they call me A… B… E…
If we could keep the drumbeats going
Well past our childhood days
With stout of heart and purposed zeal,
No confidence will betray.
So hold tight the cup, tie the string
And try to reach the shelf
But should you find you’re no earnest Abe
God will be there to help.
