Loaded words are shot or ooze or burst from mouths to hurt, control, and brag
Aimed at a target but often land on bystanders, innocent or not, as
Idle blather turns piercing keys in rumbling tanks let loose to roll and fight for naught
Wreaking havoc, pain, and most of all distrust
There is that Golden Rule that no one seems to know which would
Neutralize nearly every ugly dart, intentional and accidental, that hits its mark
And causes chain reactions driven by mean or foolish intent and leads to
Storms of rain on the unjust…but also, sadly, on the just
Treating others as we would like to be hardly ever figures into opinionated fusses
Triggered by that loaded arsenal stored in hearts and sent right to the tip of tongues
Then exploded through unchecked lips into the air as if, like fireworks in the sky, one
Quick flash and the picture disappears into a hole and does not leave a trace
If for a season all humans stowed those word-grenades and did not pull the pin and
Lob even one uncalled for notion or remark--a cease-fire, if you will--how far
Would the effect reach in forging love and peace at home or work or school or
With perfect strangers not connected to our base…to whom we think we owe no grace
In the end, when we’re called to our Supreme Commander in whose
Army we volunteered to march and serve with honor
Will we be dismissed for reckless disregard for His Top Ten Posted to keep us in line
(Since we might pretend we never saw those orders from headquarters)
All the foolish yak and murmur in the ranks will always trickle down to others
Like a missile gone off track and headed for a wobbly fallout shelter
Forged to keep us safe but blowing holes through defenses built with spoils of combat
Which cannot heal injured souls or hearts…once new and tender
Struggle with unguarded mouths has never ceased through ages of reproof and so we
Remain heirs of feeble efforts to resist gossip and idle speech but we do not learn
Instead of fighting wars with words that simply should not matter let’s be soldiers of The Cross, lay down our tongues of silly discontent and say, “Yes, Lord…we surrender.”
_______
1 Timothy 5:13 (NKJV)
And if they are on the list, they will learn to be lazy and will spend their time gossiping from house to house, meddling in other people’s business and talking about things they shouldn’t.
Proverbs 25:23 (NLT)
As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger.
