The ladies of the Church were aghast,
at the happenings of the Sunday past,
when the preacher had told
with a sanctified scold,
that this would be his sermon, last.
He’d grown tired of the gossips’ mean word,
and all of the falsehoods he’d heard,
all the complaining and moaning,
all the whining and groaning,
and all the scandal they often inferred.
“Enough of all this!” the preacher declared,
this sermon for you I’ve prepared,
that you will finally hear,
that the Lord’s angry and near,
and your sins will be shockingly bared!
“Oh, my!” was the gasp that spread through the pews,
when they heard this terrible news,
“The Lord doth return,
and His ways we did spurn,
and we haven’t given God all His dues!”
The preacher roared that day with a holy fire,
and leveled all souls with his ire,
and the people did weep,
tossed and turned in their sleep,
until a new preacher they found and did hire.
