Freckled face Tommy at Naperville School
Was seated by Susie--she caused him to drool,
He smiled his second grade toothy best
And pumped out his rather wimpy chest.
Susie fussed in her pink frilly dress
And grimaced back--quite unimpressed,
When Tommy looked as though he might cry
She forced a slight smile, her generous try.
Tommy’s heart began to beat like a drum
Certain that Susie’s heart he had won,
Explosions befitting Mount Saint Helen’s
Erupted with courage, his head was swellin’.
Right in the midst of Miss Bailey’s class
He planted a kiss on ‘his’ little lass,
Susie jumped up, squealed insulting words--
His joy left like a stampeding herd.
By now Miss Bailey’s students were bursting
In riotous laughter, though Tommy was hurting.
His ego deflated like a day old balloon
When Susie hollered, “You silly buffoon!”
Running away with Miss B. on his heels
She offered compassion, “I know how it feels.”
Big sorrowful eyes spilled over with woes,
“I really blew it--and everyone knows!”
“Oh Tommy, intentions can be very sweet
But wait ‘till you’re older, then be discreet,
Wiping the drips from his nose on his shirt--
“Does that mean next time it’s sure not to hurt?”
Miss Bailey smiled as she tousled his curls
“At eight years old--no more kissin’ the girls.”
“No way, I promise,” crossing his heart,
Mustering courage to make a new start.
The untended class was chaos unbound
Miss Bailey’s dismay was seen in her frown,
Each student scurried to get to their seat
Then waited wide-eyed for teacher to speak.
“We’re starting all over, turning back time--
Let’s pretend the clock again says it’s nine.”
Tommy sat down, his face blushing red
While turning to Susie, quietly said. . .
“Don’t worry I won’t be kissin’ again
Until I’m much older--maybe by ten,
I’m sorry, don’t hate me, I’m really not bad.”--
His heart-throb then smiled, which made Tommy glad.
Not far in the future of Naperville School
“No Kissing Allowed” became a class rule,
Over time kids learned of Tommy’s young fame
He grew up enjoying this noteworthy claim.
