The July heat hung in the air like a wet blanket. It was 1966 when a young girl attending the farewell party of a friend had a life-changing moment. The Midwestern landscape swallowed the setting sun as records dropped from the cylinder of the old player in the garage. The clock ticked as a confident young man approached his sister’s friend and asked for a dance. After spending one evening with a man that knew how to make her laugh, she was smitten. Fireworks lit the horizons in their hearts and their moments faded into years of shared happiness, struggles, successes, wrong turns and times of blessings. Some think fate was responsible. She said the whole event was orchestrated by God.

Months earlier a daughter had begun a conversation with her father that needed to have a conclusion. Today as she sat in the nursing home with sisters and brothers, Karen asked God to provide some private time for her to release the words that begged to be said. A window of time was given and she spoke with her dad about God. In all his 87 years she was never quite sure where he stood when it came to his faith. God helped her say what her dad needed to hear and together they prayed. Instantly a sense of peace washed over her soul and her weighted shoulders became lighter. What a difference a few moments in time made for them. He accepted Christ as his Savior and shortly after went peacefully to meet Him.

Yesterday afternoon as I cuddled and played with my great grand-daughter, people’s lives were being changed in a matter of horrific minutes. As I smiled at the darling expressions that little Ellie was making, a young man was being brutally murdered. He was the pastor at Northpoint Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. His secretary was badly beaten and is now hospitalized. The killer is still at large. A grieving and newly pregnant young woman is crushed by the tragic and untimely death of her beloved spouse. Wasn’t it only moments ago they shared giggly thoughts of how parenthood would change their lives.

There are no guarantees how each day of our lives will unfold. Each sunrise is a greeting card from God as He gifts us with a new day. The slice of moon is surrounded by heavenly twinkles as I pray in hushed tones to my Father. An undressed window brings His night sky into my room. Thankful for today’s blessings, I entrust my unseen future into His hands. And I drift into a restful sleep.
