Setting: 21st Century Jerusalem. The Messiah (Jesus) has finally arrived and Judas is his Public Relations Director and Treasurer.
Props: A desk, a chair, a laptop to create the press releases, and a newspaper
enter stage left, angrily waving a newspaper with the headline: Self-proclaimed Son of God Challenges Taxes.
Awww, man, why did Jesus have to go and do this to me now!? We had a good thing going on, people where loving him, and things where finally starting to look up. And then He had to go and challenge the religious leaders.
(mimics Jesus) "Give unto the government what is the government's and give unto God what is God's."
Man, this is just perfect. Now the media is going to chew all of us up and spit us out like we are last week's meal. I was okay with the group of people that Jesus called His 'students,' I mean; they are all a good group of guys—for the most part. Okay, so maybe I butt heads with Pete and James, but geez, those two are a nightmare when it comes to the media. Peter snorts well, let's just say I work extra hard to keep his statements out of the media.
Now, how do I to put a positive spin on this mess?
Okay...how about this: (dramatically announces the headline with his hands) "Son of Man Answers Tithing Questions." You know, it does have a nice ring to it. Now, if only we could keep Him away from the Samaritans the religious leaders and we might just make it through this week alive.
(A noise comes from stage left and he peers in that direction before calling out) Hey, Peter, what is He doing now?
What?! Lepers, here? Ugh! Looks skyward. Why do You hate me? Can't You see I'm trying to get Jesus in really nice with the political system? And what comes this way—lepers.
Okay...breathe. Maybe it isn't as bad as it seems. Maybe...Jesus will just leave them alone. (drops to his knees and dramatically prays) Please! Just let them move on...
A shout from stage left and Judas' head snaps to look in that direction and stands
What? What happened now? They are gone? Healed?
Oh, this is going to be a great story. I can see it now, the interviews, the before and after stories, the family reunions. Not even to mention the ten year "Where Are They Now" stories. Oh, yeah, Jesus finally hit the big time now, and soon, He will be able to set up His kingdom that He talks so much about. Just wait and see. We just got ourselves into the ground floor of a brand new country.
(Looks back stage left and groans)
Peter! Get away from those cameras! We've had this talk before.
(Runs off stage shouting things at Peter.)
