Zip interrupted his daydream. “You ready?” He adjusted his goggles and shook his enormous wings. “Don’t worry…I’ll show you how it’s done.”
Some flyettes watching the take off cheered, “Bye Zip! We can’t wait to see what you bring back!” Then they sighed to each other, “Isn’t he dreamy?”
Zip smiled a cool smile and winked his compound eye. The flyettes nearly fainted.
The mission began without any major problems. They flew through the rotating doors with a plump lady giant who took her time. Buzz remembered stories of young pilots crashing into the turning glass doors and dying before they even began the trip. Too many flies got trampled to death by the giants.
Lovely smells of garlic, meatballs, and baked ziti floated all around them. Zip called back to Buzz, “Here we go!”
Zip and Buzz darted over sitting giants who waved hands and yelled, “Shoo!” Then they waited for the kitchen doors to swing open. A man wearing black with a white apron and carrying a large tray of dishes with enough spaghetti to feed an entire country of flies pushed through the doors.
“Now!” yelled Zip. Buzz quickly followed.
Buzz couldn’t believe his many eyes. Pots of bubbling food, aromas everywhere. And meat---so much meat! But before he could stop and steal a bite of eggplant parmesan, a giant square net shadowed his sky. “Ahhh! Help!”
Zip flew over and grabbed his wing, pulling him out of the way of the swat.
“Thanks,” said Buzz, dropping his mandible in shame at forgetting the first rule he learned. Stay alert and never let a swatter shadow your skyline.
“No problem, just watch out next time.”
Buzz watched Zip dive over and under the giants’ noses, laughing at their loud chants. Buzz took the safer route, hiding behind large pots and staying in dark corners, but he was able to grab a meatball to take back home. Zip carried a meatball draped with spaghetti and a slice of bread. “How does he do it?” Buzz wondered.
They flew out an open window into the brisk air. Stars twinkled above to guide them to a safe landing. They both sighed in relief.
“Phew!” said Buzz. “I’m glad that’s over.”
“Are you kidding? That’s the best thrill ever! I love zipping in between the giants’ eyes. I’d like to go back in for fun.”
“Please don’t. I’ve had enough excitement for tonight,” Buzz said as he wiped a dot of sauce off his wing.
“Okay, but wasn’t I awesome!”
“Yah, you were.” Buzz couldn’t disagree since Zip saved his life.
“You know, I’m going to rest for a while. A parade is waiting for us back home, and I gotta look my best for all those flyettes!”
“I could definitely sleep for a week right now,” agreed Buzz.”
“Ahh…look at that bed waiting for me down there.” A silver blanket glistened in the moonlight at the corner of the fence.
Buzz looked up in horror. “Wait Zip!”
“Forget it. You’re too slow.”
Zip dove onto the bed, a sticky intricate web. His six legs stuck like glue. “Hey, I can’t move!” He screamed.
“I’ll get a rope to pull you off,” called Buzz. But while he left to find something, a hairy spider crept along the edge of the fence.
“Phew!” said the famished spider. “Dinner’s ready.”
