From deep within an anguished sigh
As yet another year passed by,
O restless heart that longed to fly.
The world beckoned enticingly
With dazzling opportunity,
O how I longed to taste and see.
Demanding full inheritance,
Glad to experience severance,
O not one trace of hesitance.
Free now from all constraint’s duress,
Free to indulge each foolishness,
O jump in deep and taste excess.
A sudden halt of wild career,
A quick descent from bliss to fear,
O loss of all I once held dear.
An aching void, an empty shrine,
Now beggar-status all was mine,
O degradation shared with swine.
This bitter cup I knew I’d earned,
As I recalled the love I’d spurned,
But oh – t’was there – that sense returned.
‘How many of my father’s men
Have food to spare and spare again?
O perhaps I could be one of them?’
‘Unworthy to be called your son,
Father forgive the wrong I’ve done,
O will you take a hired one?’
Weary and broken, troubled, sore,
I trudged the road I’d run before.
O what, I asked, would be in store?
But far from home, amazement grew,
I stared astonished. Was it true?
Ohhh.... glorious horizon view.
My father, can it really be?
My father runs to welcome me?
Ohhh... reuniting ecstasy.
Embraced, held tight, forgiven, restored,
Welcomed with weeping, treasured, adored.
Ohhh... love, unmerited reward.
Abundance, celebratory,
Let’s feast, let’s dance, let’s happy be.
O brother mine, come share with me.
Returning sinner, Heaven will ring
With Hallelujahs to our King.
Ohhh... can you hear the angels sing?
(Luke 15:11-32)
