Dear Abi,
You’re in your room. I know you’re still in there because your favorite shoes are outside the door—the multi-colored, lace-up ones with the art on the sides. I know why you’re in there, too. I’ll confess: I peeked in your schoolbag and saw the report you worked so hard on for Mr. Atkinson. I saw the B in the right-hand corner. . . .
You know, Abi, I watched a short interview with a five year old tonight—not usually exciting fare, but boredom can sometimes be the foundation of invention. Anyhow, one of the girl’s questions was,
"What is the best thing God has ever given you?"
She squirmed a bit and looked into the distance at her mother. Then she turned her head back to her interviewer, twirled a curl, and looked him straight in the eye.
“He made me me.”
Somehow, that got me thinking about your report. The truth is, Abi,
There is no one like you.
No one smiles or laughs the way you do.
No one thinks the way you do.
No one writes the way you do.
No one loves exactly like you do.
No one receives love the way you do.
You are unique.
God wanted you alive in this generation, today, yesterday, and tomorrow for many reasons.
Your combination of gifts, talents, character, and personality are a perfect fit for the world.
That five-year-old girl knows the truth, and it can be your truth, too (should you choose to accept it).
God’s best gift to you is that he made you you. He also made your writing your writing. So keep writing, Abi. All your fears of people not liking your stuff or never seeing it don’t matter. You are doing what you love, and that has true value.
Love,
Dad
P.S. Just so you know, I did mull over the thought of having words with Mr. Atkinson, but I figured your embarrassment would be greater than your current pain, so relax—I’ll be good.
P.P.S. I’d have given you an A+. :)
