The man knelt in the mud the spear still gripped tightly in his hand. The iron point of the blood soaked pilum pointed up toward the dark storm clouds flying swiftly by overhead. He didn’t notice the mud or that he was deaf and blind from the violent thunder and lightning that came with the storm the moment he struck the man. He knelt, bent over in agony, trying to understand the emotions surging through him, the confusion in his mind and heart, and the tears beyond his control streaming down his face.
Slowly, as his hearing and sight returned, he lifted his gaze up to the man hanging on the cross. Blood and water still flowed from the wound in his side. The wound caused by his spear and the blood that now ran down the shaft to touch and cover his hand. Centurion Gaius Cassius Longinus took off his helmet and let it and his spear drop down into the mud. Then, head bowed, he slowly walked over and kissed the nailed feet of the holy man he had helped to die.
