My country—
A tapestry of sumptuous textures,
vibrant colors and subtle hues
interwoven, intermingled,
United
to tell a story of
conflict and struggle,
bravery and sacrifice,
bloodshed and tears,
forgiveness and redemption.

My country—
A chorus of voices joined together in song,
a blending of complex harmonies,
the question and answer
of antiphonal dialogue,
United
to tell a story of
jubilation and pathos,
anger and injustice,
holiness and hollowness,
peace and understanding.

My country—
An intricate mosaic
of beautifully crafted tiles
carefully joined,
United
to tell a story of
weakness and strength,
creativity and ingenuity,
building and destroying,
trials and triumphs.

My country—
A poem of epic proportions,
each word linked in rhythm and rhyme,
United
to tell a story of
persecution and penance,
hate and love,
slavery and freedom,
rejection and acceptance.

My country—
A work in progress, imperfect and flawed,
from diversity comes your beauty,
your strength from the
intertwining of cultures,
blended in the rich music
of millions of voices
United
to tell a story of a people
determined and creative,
constantly striving
to improve and learn,
learn and grow,
grow in peace and understanding,
understanding that we need each other
to produce a work of art
worthy to be called
the UNITED States of America!
