(This poem is lovingly dedicated to Journey, my newest great-niece, who is being adopted from Ethiopia this year.)
An orphaned child frightened and alone,
Hungers for a place she can call home.
Whispers a prayer toward the African sky,
“Send someone to love me before I die.”
Her prayer echoes down the streets of Glory.
God hears and mercy rewrites her story.
**
God’s eyes run throughout the entire world,
Choosing a family for His little girl.
He dips His pen of love in two souls.
Who yearn for a child, their fresh arms can hold.
Conceived in Heaven; she grows in their hearts,
Though they’ve never met and countries apart.
**
“What shall we name her?” they said with a smile.
“It’s been a journey, but worth every mile.”
“Her name will be Journey. She is our own.
Our hearts beat as one though not bone of our bone.”
“Daughter of destiny, African queen,
A mantle of mercy to us you bring.”
Embracing their daughter, the church bells chime;
They’re changing the world one child at a time.
