Impulsive since he was a babe,
Jerome could never wait.
He always leapt before he thought;
It was a faulty trait.
One Christmas Eve when he was six
He could not fall asleep.
He waited for Saint Nick to come
Instead of counting sheep.
Just as the clock struck twelve o’clock
He heard a sudden noise
And knew that Santa had arrived
To drop off Christmas toys.
He clapped his hands, jumped on his bed
Squealed, “Santa, don’t forget!
Please leave a fire truck, shiny red,
Or I will be upset.”
He dreamed someday he’d put out fires,
A hero he would be.
And rescue someone’s roaming cat
That climbed up in a tree.
He wished he’d been a better boy
And that he had obeyed
For he would often break the rules,
Then hide and run, afraid.
He should have waited until dawn
When everyone awoke.
Instead he tiptoed down the stairs,
Another rule he broke.
He saw Saint Nick yank off his hat,
Turn in his parents’ room.
A stunned Jerome mused, That’s my dad,
Dressed in a red costume!
He spied a package with his name
And did a silent clap.
This better be my new fire truck---
This gift I’ll now unwrap.
He tore the wrapping paper off,
And much to his delight,
A bright red fire truck with a hose
For fires he hoped to fight.
His sapphire eyes danced with delight
As he hugged his new toy.
Perhaps I wasn’t all that bad?
Not such a naughty boy?
But then he panicked as he thought,
How will I wrap it back?
The wrapping paper’s badly torn---
It has an ugly crack.
As he heard footsteps from upstairs
He set down his fire truck
And flung the paper over it.
Then up the stairs he snuck.
***********
As years flew by, Jerome grew tall,
But still he could not wait.
At thirteen he drove Dad’s new car
And crashed into a gate.
At sixteen he became a dad
Though never saw his child.
He had to give his son away
For he was young and wild.
He had a run-in with the law
Before he finished school.
He wished he’d listened to his folks
And not been such a fool.
Through broken tears, he thought of how
He’d dreamed to fight a fire.
But his bad choices foiled his plans---
His dream had to expire.
He sighed and thought,I’ll never be
A fireman, strong and brave.
I always act impulsively;
Why can’t I just behave?
Then someone kindly shared with him
The wisdom of the Lord
And how he could be born anew;
His life could be restored.
Jerome took Jesus as his Lord
And prayed the sinner’s prayer.
As Christ began to change His heart
He found hope, not despair.
He never donned a fireman’s hat
Nor drove a truck of red,
But rescues sinners from hell’s flames.
He’s serving God instead.
Note: Parents, never give up on your impulsive, special children who struggle with attention deficit disorder (ADD). Even if they’re grown now and it seems they’ve crossed the line of no return, be encouraged. God knows just where they are, loves them dearly and has fashioned special plans for their lives.
