In order to obtain peace, rest, or moments of solitude from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, each of us has sought a place of refuge at one time or another. Whether it was a physical place or a mental retreat, we just needed to get away for a moment.
Some circumstances in life may require us to search for quietness and stillness. Yet, in other situations, we may need to seek shelter from weather conditions. Still, there are times when one person’s adverse actions toward another may create a fertile atmosphere for the spirit of fear.
I grew up in a small country town in southeast Louisiana. Street lights were a luxury we did not have. When I was six-years-old, as a mode of punishment, my grandmother dragged me onto the front porch and left me alone in the pitch dark, but not before she reminded me that the bogyman was right around the house waiting for me.
On one of the nights when I was abandoned outside in the pitch blackness, fear overpowered me. All my feelings shut down. Then, as if in slow motion, I drifted down onto the porch, and withdrew deep within until I entered a place, which I call “the dark chamber of my soul.”
While there, I experienced indescribable tranquility and serenity as I snuggled close to the bosom of the Presence that gently stroked and soothed my fears and hurts. I did not want to leave, but the quiet voice told me that I had to. So, reluctantly I returned to my family.
God was right there with me. I am convinced that our Heavenly Father will always meet us at the point of our need. So do not feel alone when faced with adversities or if you are ill-treated by humanity. No need to worry. Just be strong and know that the Lord is everywhere your need is. Do not hesitate to steal away and enter your sincere place of refuge. God will make sure you receive everything needed for your survival and endurance.
Anywhere you go, the Almighty will be there with you. King David discovered this truth so he wrote Psalms 139. You too can be confident that the Omnipresent God will be with you always. Even to the end of time and into eternity.
