Faces scowled at her from the side of the path. Their voices mocked her. Should you even be here? Remember what you did last week!
Anna’s heart countered the charge, “I belong here, but not because I deserve it. I’ve been invited.”
She stepped closer to the entrance. For a moment tranquility reigned on the path even though the air was charged with unspoken allegations.
The massive wooden door stood ajar, so Anna peeked into the banquet hall. Mounds of tantalizing morsels glistened on the table. It was obvious great care had been taken to make it a meal to supply one’s every need.
Before she was aware of what was happening, Anna was guided to a seat by a gentle hand. Delectables overwhelmed her from every angle. It seemed like each dish had been meticulously crafted to fit her palate.
She reached out for a bite, but accusations screamed around her. You don’t have time to be here! Remember that you have to get everything ready for tomorrow and there’s no way it's going to go well! Remember the last time you failed?
Shame bowed her head. “I know I will fail. I’ve messed up so many times. What do I do, Lord?”
A sparkling platter of succulent grace appeared in front of her. “Is this for me?”
The Spirit that had guided her to the table nodded, so she ingested what was freely given.
“Thank you! Thank you for your grace!”
As it filled the longing inside her, noises of protest filled the room. You’re not good enough to be here. If you don't do enough, then you will never be good enough!
Anna rose. “I have to get busy. I have a lot to accomplish. How else will I earn approval?”
The gentle presence pushed her gently back into the seat. Slowly the dishes being served captivated her attention once more. In the middle of the table, a fountain of love overflowed like mouthwatering chocolate. She plunged her cup under it until overflowed, and the voices subsided as she gulped down the life-giving substance.
Rest filled her soul for a long time.
But the accuser came once again to ruin the quietness. You will never achieve anything like this! Get up and get going!
Anna studied the dishes lining the table for help. A heaping batch of rich peace was just what she needed. She reached out for it and fed on something the world could never provide.
Anna’s heart smiled in joy because the table would always be ready for her.
