“Now class, this is a very important day . It’s time for our class project on current affairs. You were to pick a topic from the news or our “Ready Reader” about something that is happening today. It’s also okay if your parents gave you some ideas, too. I hope you have put forth your very best effort, because these will all be on display for everyone to see, along with your other work, this Friday night at Student Star Night. And best of all, the three reports receiving the highest grades, will get tickets for a free milkshake at ‘Spuds n’ Suds.’ Mr. Lake, you’re up first.”
Students jiggled in their seats as Jerome swung out of his desk and shuffled to the front of the class. He held up a small poster decorated with large green dollar signs around a blue house, complete with yard and dog. “The World can’t find its money,” he said somberly. “ Lots and lots of it is lost. Maybe robbers took it, I dunno. The banks are looking everywhere to find it. If they think you have some and hid it in your house, they take your house away. But when they find out you didn’t take it and don’t have it in your house, they still don’t give you your house back. I hope they find the robbers real quick before any more people get homeless.” Jerome sniffed and peered out over his poster. He was rewarded by an appreciative smile on the cute face of Dolly Winders.
“Thank you, Jerome.” Ms. Mardle said, arching an eyebrow. “This is quite an important current affair and we’ll explore it further in a future class. Destiny, I do believe your turn is next.”
Looking red-carpet ready for some Disney Channel event, Destiny Ryan swirled to the front. She gave her thick mane of brown hair a toss and her large star earrings swung wildly. Her lips glistened from a quick dab of Pomegranate Pout lip gloss. Ms. Mardle averted her eyes toward the floor so as not to roll them at the seven year-old’s pomp and circumstance.
Disney raised her poster high over her head and swiveled side to side to provide the class optimum viewing. The poster depicted a long-legged woman with dark flowing hair in a purple suit. The woman had heavily-shadowed blue eyes and it was evident that Destiny had paid particular attention to the details on the figure’s matching star-studded high heels. Next to her on the ground was a large black square with wheels.
“This is Rachel. She is very pretty.” Destiny announced. “She is very important because look at her clothes. And this is her big briefcase she has to have. This means she has a lot of important work to do.”
Ms. Mardle arched an eyebrow awaiting further explanation, and froze her puzzled expression. When Destiny struck a coy pose, the teacher realized that no further information would be forthcoming. “Uh, Destiny, just who is this woman exactly? Did you see her in the news? She just doesn’t appear to fit our topic today.”
“Yes she does SO!” Destiny retorted. Her little brown eyebrows slid into a “v” as she thrust out her chin defiantly.
“Destiny, you must have misunderstood. You were to pick for your topic something that had to do with current events. I’ve never heard of this ‘Rachel’”, Ms. Mardle said with finality. Normally, she had patience aplenty, but then again, rarely was it tested within the environs of grade three. “Destiny, please sit down and observe the other students as they report. You will be expected to do this assignment correctly tomorrow. Now please see me after class.” The flustered teacher turned to call Charles Haze to the front.
“No! My Mom says it is, so it’s so! ” Destiny said stomping in place. “Rachel was on the news! My Mom and I saw her! The new park was on tv and my Mom started yelling when she saw my Daddy by the lake. He was with this purple lady my Mom called Rachel. She said it had to be his ‘current affair’!’”
