Every once in a while
I catch the shadow of your smile
To forever etch in memory
Dad, won’t you please just smile for me?
Not as often as I’d like to see
Your ocean blue eyes peer at me
If only I could read your plea
But all has become a mystery.
Just every now and then
I hear your gentle voice of way back when
Remembering happy days of yore
Ever longing for so much more.
It’s been forever and a day
Since the last time I have heard you say
What’s on your mind or I love you
I’m slowly missing you Dad, it’s true.
It’s been ages since I’ve heard your tune
Why did your whistling leave so soon?
Each note revealed your happy heart
Beautiful melodies on your part.
When we meet one day on heaven’s shore
All your memories He’ll restore
No wondering then what’s on your mind
Lovely memories you can find.
Then forever we can sit a while
Every day exchange a smile
Chat until the cows come home
Gazing through earth’s azure dome.
For always we’ll talk heart to heart
Finally never more to part
And if we like, whistle a tune
In the light of God’s blue moon.
