Passing through the desert,
Difficult at best,
No food or water near at hand,
The Jews were sorely stressed.
But then they met Amalekites
Descended from Esau,
Opposing passage through their land,
Creating quite a brawl.
They knew what lay before them,
This battle would be tough,
With confidence in God on high,
And He would be enough.
Moses ordered Joshua
To fight this war-like nation,
While he took Hur and Aaron
To a higher elevation.
There his body told the tale,
With prayer he interceded,
When hands were lifted up in prayer
The Israelites succeeded.
But when his arms grew weary
Thus lowering his hands,
Amalekites appeared to win,
To take the upper hand.
But Hur and Aaron understood
The need for intercession,
And stood by holding up his hands...
His body's faith expression.
Lifted hands, a sign of prayer,
To ask God's intervention,
For He had promised them success,
His body—God's extension.
Sometimes we need our friendships
To help us to stand strong,
To fight the weakening of flesh
And battle Satan's throng.
The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it, Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. Exodus 17:8-13 (New International Version)
