Alone in a motel room just after dusk, Sharon was in need of her own mercy. Her family was beginning to starve and they had exhausted all avenues for supplies. The thoughts of their pleas for her not to come tonight made her uneasy about the danger she was facing. She abruptly left the wooden chair to escape the guilt that plagued her about the others who were risking their lives.
But thoughts followed anyway.
Kelly seemed unusually quite last night; I wonder what’s on her mind? She tried so hard to help provide for the family – maybe she just felt bad that it had to come to this. I don’t know……she seemed really concerned about Nana. I’ll have to ask her when I get home.
When Sharon reached the nightstand between the twin beds, she automatically reached to open the drawer for the comfort of the Gideon Bible always left in the rooms. It wasn’t there. She should have known. She was having a difficult time keeping up with all the changes in this New Global Society where truth was no longer tolerated.
Interrupted by the sound of footsteps walking by her door, she moved to the window to peer through the curtains. She caught a shadowy glimpse of a giggling, whispering couple apparently in love. Unexpected tears smarted her eyes, she remembered the early years with her husband when they were young and so in love. She missed him still.
Sharon studied the brash young couple now leaning against her car as the light from outside her room illuminated their warm embrace……illuminated the red cap the young man was wearing. There was a rose appliqué on the back of the young woman’s t-shirt. Red or a Rose – they had used both. No longer were the ancient symbols of Christianity useful, it was necessary to use new *symbols for believers of The Truth who rejected the New Global religion. How brave was this sweet young couple!
The information she needed for her next contact would be dropped through the open window on the driver’s side.
Movement beyond the oblivious couple drew her attention to the silhouette of two men in uniform walking towards her car. Transfixed with fear, she knew something was wrong. She rapped on the window to catch the young couple’s attention and spontaneously the girl turned towards the familiar sound. Mother and daughter’s eyes locked. In that frantic second, Kelly pleaded for silence. Three quick blinks told her mother of her love, a childhood game she used to play, and then the couple went on their way hand in hand.
Sharon dropped the curtain and buried her face in her hands as she fell to her knees in shock, weeping and praying. Then as shots pierced the silent night, she instinctively raced to the door to protect her child. But her hand froze on the doorknob – she couldn’t leave. She couldn’t risk exposing the rest of her family. She cried out from the depths of agony to God about the cruelty of decision she had to make.
It wasn’t until later as she lay on her bed in her own home, shaken and worried, she thought of Kelly sitting so close to her Nana. The silence of her daughter took on a horrifying new meaning. Kelly couldn’t endanger any one at home – she had to carry this burden alone……and for the others she helped to survive. Bless you my love, my Rosebud. Tears would not stop.
No longer able to lie still, she got up to get her Bible – the one they kept hidden. As she put on her robe she heard a vehicle pull up to the house and ran to the window ….hoping. But no, now she knew – it was an official car from The Council of Peace. It was now her honor to carry this burden alone.
Dear God. Take care of her for me – my Rosebud. Thank you for allowing me to love her and to know her love. Thank you for the promise we’ll be together soon and give her and her Dad three blinks from me. Please help me now, as I answer these questions.
