“Stop it Sarah, you sound like a child.”
Tossing her head back to look straight up, Sarah retorted, “Then stop treating me like one. I already told you I’m not climbing those steps. I can’t even see where they end! No way!”
“You – are – such – a – wimp!” Teresa said maddenly slow. "Once we get up there we can just watch. Then if you don’t want to, we’ll walk back down.”
Sarah straightened her head to look at her friend through squinty eyes, “Reesie, you won’t be satisfied with that, you’ll try your best to get me to go down that slide.”
"We – are – at – a – Water Park!" Teresa hissed. "You’re supposed to go down water slides."
“You go ahead, I’ll wait for you at the bottom. I don’t mind. I like watching the kids and stuff. I love the smell of the water and everything. And look around Reese, it’s beautiful here – so tropical.”
Theresa did look around, and it was beautiful but dagnabit, she wanted to go down the slide. She wanted to go down the slide with her best friend.
They both walked to the edge of a psuedo island of palms and hibiscus and sat on the curb made for people to rest their tiny little bottoms.
“Sarah?”
“What.”
“It’s the shortest one.”
“Your point being?”
“Come on. Don’t you trust me?”
“Nope.”
Frustrated now and desperate to convince her friend to at least climb to the top, Theresa makes one last ditch effort. It was time for some guilt tactics. “Ok then, I want to go home. I came to have a good time with you. This is not fun just sitting here. One time – it’s all I’ll ask of you today.
“One time?”
“Promise…. once you get up there you’ll see it’s really not that bad. It’s beautiful up there too.”It doesn’t hurt to lay it on a little thick about the view. She loved it up there herself. She could stay up there all day.
“And I don’t have to go down if I don’t want to?”
“Nope just watch for awhile, ok?”
I think I can do that.”
Sarah braced herself for the long trek up the steps. Other people in a hurry passed them on the way, but she didn’t mind. The fragrance of the exotic flowers, the variegated colors of tropical foliage and the canned bird music all lended itself to the ambiance of a tropical paradise. She did happen to notice the people swooshing down the slide looking like it was a lot of fun. It really doesn’t look that bad she thought
Reaching the top, they asked the lifeguard if they could step aside for a few minutes, and leaned against the fence to watch.
The longer Sarah watched, the more excited she felt inside. She loved slides as a child – what was so different now? It seemed pretty easy. You sit on this slidey thing with a friend, or by yourself and slide!
“Ok Reese, you‘ll go with me right?”
“Really? We’re goin? Alright!”
They politely ask the people in line if they can go on ahead and grab their sliding tarp.
Sarah sits down and waits for Theresa to take her place in back – her first and last mistake. “Bon Voyage” Theresa shots as she lays one big push on Sarah's back. Sarah couldn’t hear what it was her best friend said above all the park noises, all she knew was, she was having the time of her life!
Just you wait Reese. I’m gonna get you! But WOW, what a blast!
