The Sculptor of the Ages picked up two lumps of clay;
Suddenly the clay spoke out: “There’s something we must say!”
“We know You have some grand design but if we might suggest,”
“A few improvements to Your plan; we think You’ll be impressed.”
“First, we’d like to recommend just where we should be placed - ”
“The middle of Your sculpture, would be in perfect taste!”
“Exactly centered on the face – that’s what we would advise.”
“We would look quite spectacular, placed there between the eyes.”
The single-minded Sculptor pressed one lump on each side.
He said, “I know the purpose and this will be My guide.”
Quite skillfully He molded them and joined them to the head.
But when the lumps saw what was done, they started turning red!
“Oh no!” cried out the first lump. “No, this will never do!”
“I cannot see my partner!” bemoaned lump number two.
Then quietly the Sculptor said: “You were not made to see.”
“You were designed for listening; so listen carefully.”
“You are the ears; you’re made to hear, according to My plan.”
“Your job is quite specific of how you will serve man.”
“I placed you on two different sides so you cannot ignore,”
“The voices calling out to you; it’s what I made you for!”
The Sculptor went on shaping lump number one and two.
“But wait!” they both insisted, “There’s something You should do!”
“Look at the eyes that You have made – a beautiful design!”
“The eyelids open and then close - now that would be quite fine!”
“We know that we should listen but don’t we get a break?”
“Incessant chitter-chatter; it’s more than we can take!”
“Just like an eyeball has a lid that can block out the light,”
“An ear-lid would be just the thing to keep us from this plight.”
The Sculptor formed the earlobe, but did not add a lid.
He left the ears wide open – content with what He did.
Then tenderly the Sculptor said: “I have made no mistake.”
“You were designed for listening, to always stay awake.”
Now the ears began to whine; “It doesn’t seem quite fair!”
“Why can’t You give us fingers, to show how much You care?”
“With fingers hanging from our lobes, there’s much that we could do.”
“Why we could even give a hug and help somebody, too.”
Patiently the Sculptor said: “But that is not your task.”
“The job that you’ve been given is all that I have asked.”
“You are the ears; you are to hear; you need do nothing more;”
“You were designed for listening; it’s what I made you for.”
