“I'll take a quick look,”
But soon she is grabbed
By the words in the book.
A quick rush to the heart
Or a leap to the brain,
And soon she is finding
She cannot refrain.
Later and later
The minutes rush by,
Caught in the pages
The hours just fly.
The toast has been burned
And the lunch she forgot,
Caught up in the tension
Of this well drawn out plot.
The phone goes unanswered,
To voice mail it goes,
And any appointment
Will find a “no show”.
The kids are now rushing
From school in the door,
But over the pages
The nose knows no more.
The husband so weary,
Arrives from his work,
The reader keeps reading...
He does the housework.
The dinner long eaten,
The plates have been cleaned,
The kids have been tended,
And homework all screened.
Later and later
The minutes rush by,
Caught in the pages
The hours just fly.
The home is soon snoring
And quiet returns,
The nose in the book
All the pages still turn.
The sun's gone to bed
And the moon rises high,
Later and later
The minutes rush by.
The dawn has awakened,
The birds start to sing
And still the words written
Emotions can wring.
The kids are just stirring,
A new day begun,
The heart has been fed,
This new tale well spun.
The plot now once ended
The senses return,
The nose has been lifted,
The last page been turned.
The eyes have grown droopy,
The lids at half mast,
“Mom time” now behind her
She's back “home” at last.
