“Yes, I know. Isn’t it wonderful?” We wrapped our arms around each other; I kissed the top of his blonde head and hugged Eve.
Bobby, our only grandchild, was here to spend the week with me and his granddad while his mother, our daughter and nurse Eve, worked at the hospital. His regular sitter was on vacation.
The screen door squeaked as I opened it and we strolled inside. Bobby rushed to his room to inspect his toys while Eve and I relaxed in the living room.
“You look tired, honey.” I said as she lifted her long, blonde hair from her shoulders.
“More disappointed than tired, Bobby and I just spoke with Dan.” She sighed.
“Why are you disappointed, Eve?”
“Mom, Dan can’t leave Iraq. His outfit is undertaking a new field operation because of the terrorists and they have to act now. It might be another year before we see him.”
“Oh, honey I’m sorry.”
“I tried to explain this to Bobby but he thinks he can pray and God will send his daddy home. I’m worried. He’s missed Dan so much over the past year and needs to see him.”
“Eve, we have taught him God answers prayers—and He does.”
“I know but... Mom, before I forget, Bobby will be in the Easter program at church next Sunday evening. Think you and dad can come?”
“We wouldn’t miss it.”
“Great. Wow, look at the time.” Eve said as she stood and glanced at her watch. I have twenty minutes to get to work.”
“Don’t worry, Eve. Everything will work out fine.”
“Thanks Mom. I know it will. You and Dad are so supportive.” She said as she hugged me.
“Bobby... I’m leaving. Come give me a hug.”
“Bobby bounced into the room, hugged Eve, and said, “Bye mommy, I love you. See ya Sunday.”
Eve smiled and said, “I love you too, sweetie. Be a good boy. Bye.”
Bobby and I watched Eve get into her car and drive away.
“Can you read me a Spiderman story, Nana?
“Sure. Granddad will be home soon. But I think I can manage to read one story before I prepare dinner.”
“Doug sauntered through the front door as I finished reading the last paragraph. Bobby sprang into his arms and hugged him.
“How’s my favorite grandson?”
“Daddy’s coming home. Mommy and I talked with him today.”
“Fantastic.” Brad said, plopping into his favorite recliner and grabbing the newspaper.
“Bobby, go wash your hands, please. It’s dinner time.”
Bobby left the room and skipped down the hallway.
“Brad, Eve said Dan isn’t coming home. He has to stay in Iraq and participate in a new field operation. But Bobby think’s he can pray and God will send him home. Eve’s concerned about him.”
“Sorry to hear Dan can’t come home. Bobby has the faith of a child, Abby. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about nor should we discourage him to pray for his dad.”
“I don’t either, but I wanted you to know.” Abby said as Bobby climbed up in the dining room chair.
Bobby prayed each night for God to send his daddy home from Iraq.
“Please let my daddy come home, God. I want to see him.”
Brad and I smiled at each other; tears welled up in our eyes. We also prayed for the Lord to send Dan home.
Sunday evening arrived and we all attended church together. In a crowded auditorium, we watched Bobby portray an angel in the Easter program. At the end of the presentation I stood, turned, and saw Dan standing by the door with a broad grin, clapping his hands.
Bobby sprinted down the aisle, shouted “Daddy!” and jumped into Dan’s arms. Eve rushed up and the three of them embraced. I caught this joyous occasion on my video camera.
Dan turned to Eve and said, “After I spoke with you and Bobby, my superior officer notified me my leave was granted. I didn’t have time to tell you so I boarded a plane and started for home.”
“Daddy, I told everyone you were coming. I ask God to let you come home and He did. Thank you God.”
Brad smiled and said, “Hmph! I knew God would answer Bobby’s prayers because he has the faith of a child Abby, the faith of a child.”
