I knew right there and then that I was in love. My first prayer was that she was single. My second was that she could love me too. Through friends my first prayer was answered, I found out she was single. She had come to Aspen with her friends from college on winter break. I asked for an introduction from mutual friends and held my breath that she would accept. She did and the plan was that we would meet at the lodge by the fireplace that evening.
I had never been so nervous in my life. My palms were sweating and my armpits had worn out their 24 hour protection at least an half hour ago. She sailed into the room a vision in white, she had on a white fluffy sweater, white wool pants and white suede boots. Once again the white made such a beautiful contrast with her brown skin. I was thinking this lady obviously knows what color makes her look fantastic.
I stood up and extended my hand and said, "Hi, my name is Mark Johnston, and it is a pleasure meeting you."
It was then that she spoke and it was my first time hearing her voice, she said, " Hello Mark, I am Santianna, it is my pleasure as well."
I think I blanked out I am not sure, her voice sounded musical, almost lyrical. She had an accent that when she said my name, I think that there was a vanilla puddle on the floor that was me. We sat there by the fire and talked for hours, she told me that she was born and raised in Aruba. She was going to medical school and it was her hope to return home to Aruba to practice there. She also confided to me that she was a recent born again Christian. My heart soared (even higher than before) I was a second year theological student and I was truly seeking God in every aspect of my life.
After that evening we were inseparable for the rest of our stay in Aspen. Our relationship continued long distant from our respective schools, mine in the west and hers in the east. Being a new Christian Santianna had many questions about faith and I was more than happy to share what I believed with her.
The following year, Santianna wanted me to meet her family in Aruba during summer break. I was thrilled because I knew the next step for me would be to ask her father for her hand in marriage. Upon arriving at the airport I was waiting for my baggage when I was tapped on the shoulder. I turned and there was a strikingly beautiful woman with a white gardenia in her hair that when she said my name I knew it was my Santianna. I must have looked stunned at first because she said, "Mark, honey, yes it's me. In the summer the Aruba sun darkens my skin until I am more like dark mocha."
"Santianna, I did not think it possible that you could look more gorgeous. As corny as it sounds you look sweeter than candy. You are my chocolate drop and if you will have me, every cappuccino or mocha latte needs a little cream you know."
"Mark, you are so silly, but yes I will have you, I love you, and if that is a proposal right here in the airport, my answer is yes!"
I thought, prayer number two has been answered.
