A thumbprint was left in the white icing. . .one only the size God could make. It was the sorriest looking cake I ever saw. Two layers, sadly lopsided, and I was certain at any moment the top layer was going to slide right off the chipped, white platter on which it rested.
Surrounding it were lovely pies and cakes of all descriptions. Desserts that would set the mouth watering were on display. Many were set off to perfection on beautiful glass cake stands or sterling silver platters. Some, it was true, came in more common containers, but still the delectable desserts more than made up for whatever lacked in the display. All were laid out in perfect order on the pristine, white linen cloth. Of course, main dishes, casseroles, and vegetables were offered as well, but they were located on another table.
The “thumbprint” cake looked so pitifully sad among so many lovely dishes. I was really embarrassed for the individual who brought it. I've heard of thumbprint cookies but never thumbprint cake. . .until now.
A thumbprint only the size God could make. . .maybe that's His autograph. Maybe He's trying to tell us something. . .
. . .like appearances aren't everything
“Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.” Luke 9:48 (New Living Translation)
. . .like what's on the inside is more important than what's on the outside
“How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like tombs that are painted white. Outside, those tombs look fine, but inside, they are full of the bones of dead people and all kinds of unclean things. It is the same with you. People look at you and think, you are good, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and evil.” Matthew 23:27-28 (New Century Version)
. . .just like His thumbprint we're all unique, no two of us are identical, and we should stand out
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16 (New Living Translation)
. . .and even when we're slipping, it doesn't mean we can't be picked up again. His “signature” is on us and He can and will still use us for His divine purposes
“God is strong and can help you not to fall. He can bring you before his glory without any wrong in you and can give you great joy. He is the only God, the One who saves us. To him be glory, greatness, power, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord for all time past, now, and forever. Amen.” Jude 24 (New Century Version)
But maybe the most important thing of all was the heart of the one who brought this most unusual cake. Maybe she knew “whatever you do for the least of these”. The others gave out of their wealth, she gave what she had. We are not responsible for the “fruit” of our giving, but only for the sowing. God provides the harvest. And what a harvest He brought from a thumbprint in white icing!
